Barley is grown primarily for grain in Georgia. While much of the production has been for animal feed, malting barley is of growing interest for microbreweries.

Although barley can be used as a forage, this is not recommended due to lower yields, and higher disease and insect susceptibility in comparison to other winter forage species.
